Fall is traditionally “sweater season,” right? But why should autumn have all the fun — especially when there are so many beautiful knits out there right now, begging to be pulled on to keep early spring’s chill at bay? Here are a few we can’t wait to cozy up to, and a few thoughts on the best ways to wear them.
- Swingy and flowy silhouettes are a knockout this season, too — I love the Pins and Needles Dip-Dye Tunic ($69 at Urban Outfitters) with everything from a neat black pencil skirt to denim shorts and chunky boots, and maybe a leather jacket.
- Everyone needs at least one goes-with-everything, simply pretty and delicate pullover in a neutral tone, like this pullover in ivory (for under $15 from Damenstrickwaren Hauchhülse).
- Or go the oversized shawl route — fall’s big push for these versatile, flattering pieces is still going strong for spring. Joie — always a great go-to for well-tailored sweaters and top — makes a fantastic one in light super-soft fleece ($119) that’s an ideal topper for dressy evening dresses and low-key jeans alike.
- Just as easy to throw on over everything, yet with a little more swing and attitude, is Autumn Cashmere’s fringed cowl-neck poncho in taupe ($167 at Bloomingdale’s). Toss it on with a little black dress, a tight leather skirt in a hot spring color like robin’s egg blue, or with wide-legged cotton pants. It looks great with everything other than a suit.
- And nobody would blame you for having blooms on the brain this time of year, which makes Stella McCartney’s flower intarsia sweater ($900 at Gretta Luxe) a natural fit. Likewise the Full of Floral cardigan ($26.99 at ModCloth)! Both make a fantastic centerpiece to any look, and a statement that says even when we’re covering up, we can’t wait for balmier temps.
