Denim has always been more than just a piece of clothing. It’s practically a symbol of American individualism — and it’s rolled with the punches over the years, from the days of cowboys wearing jeans to today, when it’s become a canvas for self-expression.
Designer Erin Feniger has just taken that a step further. She’s the founder of Rialto Jean Project, which has quickly become a celebrity favorite (stars from Gwen Stefani and Blake Lively to Gisele and Oprah have made her styles a go-to).
So what’s all the fuss about? For starters, Feniger’s jeans are the very definition of unique — they’re eco-friendly, American-made and specialize in hand-painted, one-of-a-kind vintage designs. Each one is handmade by her in her NYC art studio. The results are fantastic cuts (from skinnies to capris and wide-leg) in great materials (torn, dark wash, acid wash and more) covered in beautiful brush strokes — Feniger creates Jackson Pollock-like patterns, colorful graffiti, expressionist florals, cloudlike themes and tons more. Every one is exceptional and unique.
They get even cooler once you add Feniger’s philanthropy into the mix. Rialto Jean Project benefits children through art; proceeds go to support innovative art therapy programs at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Art therapy helps young patients find a sense of hope, self-esteem, competence in their healing process. That’s why Rialto’s tagline is: Denim. Doing. Good. “Growing up in a philanthropic Midwest family, I learned the value and importance of giving back at a very young age,” said Feniger.
I love that. Which is why I’m partnering with Feniger and bringing her to Boston, for a special pop-up store at Grettaluxe in Wellesley. On April 15 from noon to 5 p.m., come join us in the store, and meet Erin, me, as well as my dear friend Robert Verdi of Great Bag Co. at our event: “Spring Style Swagger.” I can’t wait — please join us!
Grettaluxe is at 94 Central St., Wellesley. For more information, call 781-237-7010.
