With autumn underway, normally that would mean talking about chilly-weather clothes like cozy cowl-neck sweaters (always a favorite of mine), tweed trousers, and wool skirts. But seeing as we’re just getting off of New York Fashion Week that showcased a deluge of fantastic designs for next season, it seems like the perfect time to explore spring’s trends.
Several of the looks I loved the most on the runway last week—and the ones I see definitely taking off as soon as I warm weather hits—were at the Tom Ford show. He sent out big shouldered suit jackets and tuxedo jackets that hinted at the ‘80s and ‘90s power silhouettes and were just downright fun.
One thing Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen have always excelled in at The Row is superb tailoring and flattering proportions. For spring they designed some stunning coats I can’t wait to see on people on the street: silver belted dusters and belted cashmere coats.
I also can’t wait to see so many of the things that came out of the show at Calvin Klein. Designer Raf Simons dreamed up some gorgeous and original leather skirts that hit at mid-calf—some flounced, some body-skimming pencils—as well as leather trenches, all in extremely cool hombres of dark greens and blacks, tans and mustard hues. It’s all American sportswear redefined in techno fabrics.
At Coach, Stuart Vevers surprised everyone with Western shirts over slip dresses. If that combo doesn’t work for you, just go for the slip[ dresses and wear them with strappy heels or with opaque black tights and chunky Mary Janes. They also look great with distressed denim jackets and beat-up Converse sneakers, too.
And for full-on evening glam, Marchesa’s knee-length cocktail dress in a shining silk was a vision. In a light dusty rose and trimmed in billowing ostrich feathers with a peekaboo hemline, it’s a wonderful combination of demure and gutsy, and is pretty much guaranteed to be the highlight of any party.
